As part of the new Payment Services regulations (PSD2), you may be asked more often to verify a purchase when using your card online. The industry-wide changes means that online retailers will need to ask us for extra security checks, to confirm that it's you, or your additional cardholder(s) making the purchase.
To do this, you'll be sent a One Time Passcode (OTP) to your registered mobile number, which you'll need to enter on the retailer's checkout process to complete your purchase. This is to make sure it's definitely you that is making the purchase, and protect you from fraud.
If a fraudster obtains your card information they won't be able to use it for online transactions without a one time passcode.
As well as entering an OTP, you may also be asked to enter your home postcode to confirm your online purchase. This is so we can use behavioural biometric recognition technology to verify your identity.
If you pay using Apple Pay or Google Pay, you won't be sent a one time passcode, or asked to enter your postocde, to complete your online purchase. This is because your digital wallet has its own security checks built in.
We'll never call, email or ask you for your OTP, so please don't share it with anyone. For more information on protecting yourself from fraud, go to virginmoney.com/fraud.
